Digital Imaging
The PACS (Picture Archiving and Communications System) is a completely digital means of capturing, storing and displaying x-rays, eliminating the need for film. This is a digital form of x-rays whereby the x-ray is kept on a computer rather than on an x-ray film. This prevents x-rays getting lost or miss-placed and also allows the doctor to zoom in and out of the x-ray and change the contrast or the density of the image to gain a clearer or more specific picture.
The new system saves time because it eliminates the need to wait for films to come back from the doctor. Within seconds of taking the images, they are ready to be viewed. Images can be reviewed simultaneously by people in multiple locations. The pictures can be accessed through the Internet or put on a CD or film for a physician’s perusal.
