The division has made significant progress since its inception integrating superb patient care, an organized outstanding teaching service, and a high quality, high profile research program.
Patient Care Management
Outpatient Visits
The institute currently has 2 days a week of outpatient clinic service. The clinic days are Wednesday and Thursday at the Mercy Outpatient Center. Valet parking is available from 8am to 8pm. The clinical research team attends all clinic consultations and performs data collections for all projects.
International Patients
The Orthopaedics Institute and his director Dr. Carlos J. Lavernia have gained international patient recognition as an important center for excellence in joint replacements. Most of these patients hail from Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador, or from islands in the Caribbean.
Orthopedic Surgery Conferences
A combined Orthopaedics conference is held every week at 7 am on Tuesdays. Although the topic of the conference is usually joint replacement, orthopedic surgeons that attend the conference are encouraged to present cases not pertinent to joint replacement. To ensure a more objective presentation of cases, a patient is asked at least once a month to attend a conference and his or her case is presented. For additional information click here.
International Conferences
Dr. Carlos Lavernia is actively
involved as a faculty member and lecturer in multiple
meetings nationally and internationally throughout
the year. He is also the Director of the International
Arthroplasty Symposium held yearly in Miami. The symposium is intended for the orthopaedic surgeon who is
interested in the latest techniques in knee and
hip arthroplasty. Surgical techniques are demonstrated
via live procedures during which the observing surgeons
are encouraged to ask questions. In addition,
presentations focus on clinical results and biomaterials
that contribute to prosthetic longevity.
